hello hello

at this point i feel it needful to clarify...

so yes, for the avoidance of doubt:
1. nono, no eloping.
2. and even if i were to be eloping, it would not have been with adam
3. (much as i am fond of him)
4. the sydney series is far from over, have some hunter valley posts coming right up :)

kthnxbye.

marching on our stomachs sydney

edit: charlotte has a lovely recipe on ginger brulee over here! what fortuitous timing :)

early-ish start to the hunter valley, but not before a pit stop at bourket street bakery for the ginger brulee that fran was raving about. one word: WOW. unsurprisingly, we ended up with a box of sweets for the road...

stuck our noses into the books on display at book cafe (opposite bourke street bakery)

before heading north to the valley.

also unsurprisingly, we were waylaid once again by the siren call of the coffee temptress and this hard to find gem had coffee that assuaged any guilt we might've felt. the valley could wait while the inner coffee gremlin had his fill.

thrifty sydney

to risk sounding more maudlin than age-appropriate, the best things in life are free. like glorious sunsets and a rainbow or two. collected our wheels from the thrifty rental at darlinghurst and were quick to milk our newfound mobility with a drive right up to the coast where we were very lucky to catch the sunset, and rainbows on display.

then when it got dark, we looped back to bondi for some cool chasing at icebergs.

hillsongs city sydney

lovely morning visiting the church adam grew up in, followed by lunch at ampersand in paddington where our host was in his element. there were storeys and storeys of stories (haha) and it started to drizzle so we parked ourselves indoors with hot drinks to while the afternoon away.

can't get enough sydney

the harbour bridge and opera house are, naturally, recurring themes in this sydney album and the last. there's such a magnetism about these two structures and i'm inexplicably drawn to them every opportunity. love how they look so different at night :)

plus there was some pretty yummy cider on tap at the al fresco bar just by the opera house...

lieabout sydney

yet another beautiful winter's day that began with a lie-in past noon, transitioned into an all day breakfast at bills (darlinghurst), before we moseyed down to darling harbour and had wraps on the steps.

uh, surry hills? sydney

precisely nick's response when i asked him to meet us at bodegas. unschooled in the local ways, i had no clue that i'd just asked the dear boy and his lovely fiancee to meet us in one of the dodgiest parts of town.

but being the troopers they were, they obliged and risked life and limb for some tapas which thankfully, was declared to be worth the potential assault.

we'd the yummiest "fish fingers"i.e. sashimi kingfish on garlic toast with cuttlefish ceviche and mojama

the effervescent waitress recommended this - can't remember the name but hey it was pretty darn delish!

and the most refined banana split ever. whoever re-thought banana split as cream flan, dulce de leche ice cream, ginger biscuit and banana is sheer genius!

funny story about nick and fran. met nick while he was interning at the firm when i first started pupilage. he's gotta be the highest qualified (he's already an engineer with work experience...) and highest functioning intern (he was doing closing subs when we met. hellooo??!) of all time. he'd the misfortune of my being seated facing him. in the closed quarters that the old office was, all i had to do was look up and i'd be accidentally staring right at him. thankfully, for him more than me, he was away at trial for most of the time we overlapped at the firm but we did get talking and when he planned the sweetest proposal at the end of his internship, i was honoured to be part of the post-engagement party. and if i thought nick was nice, just wait till i met fran :) so yay you two! thrilled we got to catch up down under and can't wait to see you back on home turf.

(pity bodegas was too dark for photos. ripped this off fran's profile :) aren't they cute!)

something about sailboats that's just so manly

it's little wonder that the manfriend used to be a competitive sailor.

had the good fortune of arriving on a perfect winter day. crisp, cool and not a cloud in the sky. the weatherman wasn't as optimistic for the next few days so we jumped at the chance to take a post-siesta ferry ride to manly for some fish & chips.

there is something to be said about eating take out fish & chips on a public bench covered in sea gull poop, and not minding in the least.

hit the ground running sydney

landed bright and early at 545am. despite arriving at such an ungodly hour, adam was sweet to offer to pick us up. before we linked up, i picked up the guide and map that i ended up never opening. talk about superfluous :)

started the morning right with one of the best breakfasts ever at the iconic bondi cafe. i'm not much of a coffee fan (gimme tea anyday!) but even picky wicky me was impressed with this cuppa. and who'd have thought it be the first of a steady stream of excellent cups.

walked off breakfast along bondi and checked out bondi icebergs from a distance. doesn't the pool look so inviting in the day? revisited icebergs a few evenings later and it looks so different at night.

and some bondi mosaic as spied on the promenade...

sun's out, surf's up!

p/s: have scheduled the sydney posts to publish at 9am daily for the next few days so do check back if you'd like to see more of sydney and the hunter valley.

sydneyside

just a few days to old friends, bondi and hunter valley :)

there's something really warm and fuzzy about hanging out with old old friends, who were at every birthday party growing up, disappear for a coupla' of years and then reappear at the very same firm you're working at. the world is too small and one of the best things about the bar exam course and pupilage was getting reacquainted with A.

and because we can't get enough of A, we're headed down unda' to hang out outside the office - the true test of an office bromance ;)

forever changed after tetsuya

had the privilege of dinner at tetsuya's - probably the single most compelling reason i went to sydney. tetsuya's is the stuff of dreams, and after waku ghin in singapore, all the more i wanted to visit the sydney restaurant for comparison. yes, i realise they're a different cuisine but it's the same man behind the magic and i like to think that the restaurants combined give one a more holistic sense of the man himself.

it also helped that just before dinner i was at a friend's and she lives literally 5minutes from the japanese house smack in the middle of the city that tetsuya's operates from. talk about prime real estate!

the private room had a even more private zen garden which did calm me down some. you should've seen the frenzy i'd worked myself into pre-dinner. aiyoh so uncool but it's true ;)

the amazing truffle butter with black truffle infused and embedded in the mix. it was so light and creamy, with a hint of cheese and after i single-handedly polished off the communal serving (mind you, i don't even eat much butter back home), the ever-attentive waiter magically produced another helping and with a wink, told me to 'knock yourself out'. now that is classy service!

the oysters weren't part of the degustation but we couldn't resist ordering plates of these babies. they came swimming in the most delectable ponzu sauce - light enough not to marinade them precious mollusks but substantial enough to perfectly complement their springy texture and tangible freshness.

the first course was similar to sashimi but because it came swimming in the perfect accompaniment, it was closer to a dressed carpaccio. looks like snapper to me, but i can't quite remember. was too busy savouring every nibble.

scampi with dollops of cream on a bed of tofu and goats cheese. call me biased but while this was objectively delicious, it was a far cry from the botan ebi served with uni and iranian caviar that is my absolute favourite dish at waku ghin. feel somewhat sorry that tetsuya's is limited by the produce that can be imported into australia. despite serving fresh local produce in sydney, almost to the point of protectivism, give me the gastronomical smorgasboard that is available in singapore any day. so this course felt like the poor cousin of what i'd eaten at waku ghin.

this confit of ocean trout is tetsuya's signature dish. there's some complicated rocket science behind its preparation and presentation. it's supposedly cooked at a low temperature for a long time with the oven door open so as to create the illusion of an uncooked fillet despite being semi-cooked. the konbu coating was a nice touch, gave it that salty kick and contrast in texture with the silky meat.

can't remember exactly what this was but it tasted good, just like everything else. that's the problem with retrospective posting. not in the habit of intellectually engaging with what i consume and the menu as it is rattled off is usually in one ear and out the other :(

this was a particularly creative use of sea cucumber, sliced finely in a cross-section and served atop some lamb ragout (i think that's what it was. again, i plead a short-term memory) the jelly-like texture of the sea cucumber was a great complement to the stringy-er lamb fibre.

slow-cooked duck breast wrapped in pancetta (pork belly) with an oriental hodge podge next to it. there was some instantly recognisable quinoa in the little mound which brought back memories of the roadside quinoa our host pilfered.* plus, at this course there was a hilarious interjection by one of the other guests hellbent on convincing us that pork belly was all nerves and no fat ;)

the sorbet intermezzo served with cappucino creme brulee

strawberries and cream, but more atas

chocolate brick with home-made vanilla-bean ice cream

an espresso to finish with

and some daifuku petit fours

now that i've been to tetsuya's, i can die happy. don't think i'm ever going to go back because no subsequent meal is going to match up to my highly anticipated and much enjoyed first. there's something special about first times, and i don't intend to detract from the mystery and overwhelming sense of awe i felt throughout the course of the evening. am eternally grateful to my immensely gracious host, who has elevated my appreciation of food from mere gasak (malay slang for indiscriminate gluttony) to gastronomy.

so this post concludes the sydney series. on hiatus till the next holiday. will be in kuching month-end for a wedding then tokyo over the deepavali long weekend, and for most of study break hehe.

*the quinoa story, as promised.

last summer (well it was peruvian winter so let's call it that), we passed through fields of quinoa en route back to el refugio from our condor-sighting at colca canyon. nathanael the guide robustly hopped out of the 4x4 and swiped some quinoa for our lunch. not like we're accustomed to helping ourselves from other people's fields but in response to our semi-horrified and quizzical looks, nathanael conveyed through sign language and some spanglish that even if the farmer caught him red (yellow?) handed, he would be more than happy to share his harvest with tourists who'd never tried quinoa before. such pride they have in their grain heritage!

and back at el refugio, nathanael arranged for the chef to whip us up some fresh quinoa soup and baby alpaca steaks.

cute as alpacas are, they taste even yummier when divvied up on a platter. i could never be vegetarian ;)
