had the privilege of staying at el refugio mere days before it opened to the public in may 2009. twas surreal to be the only guests, and have the run of the hotel! my inner megalomaniac was thrilled to live it up in the seemingly private resort. mine, all mine! needless to say, it was a fantastic time and senor postigo, hotelier extraordinaire and our very gracious host spared no expense to make it a stay to remember. in gratitude, i've attempted to send everyone i know who's headed to peru to colca, as well as to talk them into staying at el refugio. it's a beautiful hotel on the canyon floor with a babbling stream running through the premises. the fish is so fresh because every afternoon the chef is parked on the river banks fishing for dinner. how awesome is that?! and don't get me started on the thermal bath. cue earlier post where i'm not a morning person but even i couldn't say no to senor postigo's invitation to soak with him at 6am. my goodness - not for the faint hearted!
saw some more recent photos of el refugio (you can see them toO!) and was thrilled by how much it's developed since i stayed. it looks even better now and i do hope to go back one day.
